Objective

Duration: 10 to 15 minutes

This stage aims to set the scene for the lesson by establishing a clear understanding of electrical power and its practical use in calculating energy consumption. It also seeks to enhance socio-emotional skills by fostering awareness around responsible electricity use, ultimately promoting wise decision-making and greater social awareness.

Objective Utama

1. Understand what electrical power is and its significance in assessing the energy usage of electrical appliances.

2. Learn to calculate the electricity consumption of common household items, helping to identify monthly electrical usage and costs on bills.

3. Raise awareness about the responsible use of electricity, encouraging practices that save energy.

Introduction

Duration: 15 to 20 minutes

Emotional Warmup Activity

Mindful Breathing

Breathing Mindfulness

1. Ask students to sit comfortably in their chairs, feet flat on the floor and hands resting on their thighs.

2. Instruct them to gently close their eyes or keep them slightly open, focusing on a point in front of them.

3. Encourage students to concentrate on their breathing without trying to change it, just noticing the air coming in and out.

4. Prompt them to feel the air flowing in through their noses, filling their lungs, and then slowly releasing it.

5. Ask students to keep observing their breath for a few minutes. If their mind wanders, gently guide them back to their breathing.

6. After a few minutes, invite students to slowly open their eyes and, when they’re ready, share how they felt during the activity.

Content Contextualization

Electrical power is a vital concept for understanding our use of electricity in everyday life. Consider all the gadgets we rely on: from cellphone chargers to microwaves. Grasping electrical power helps us make more informed choices about our energy usage, promoting savings and sustainable practices. Furthermore, by calculating electricity usage, we can reflect on how our decisions affect both the environment and our household bills, encouraging a sense of social responsibility and self-discipline in resource management.

Development

Duration: 60 to 75 minutes

Theory Guide

Duration: 20 to 25 minutes

1. Definition of Electrical Power: Explain that electrical power refers to the amount of electrical energy an appliance consumes over a specific time period, measured in watts (W).

2. Formula for Electrical Power: Introduce the formula P = V x I, where P stands for power in watts, V for voltage in volts, and I for current in amperes. Discuss each element of the formula and how they interconnect.

3. Practical Example: Compare two devices: a 60W bulb and a 100W bulb. Ask students which consumes more energy and why.

4. Electric Consumption: Clarify the distinction between power and energy consumption. Note that consumption is the total energy used, calculated as Power (W) x Time (h).

5. Monthly Consumption Calculation: Use the example of a 100W device running for 5 hours daily. Show the maths: 100W x 5h x 30 days = 15000Wh (or 15kWh).

6. Impact on the Environment and Economy: Discuss how energy consumption affects utility bills and the environment, motivating energy-saving behaviours.

Activity with Socioemotional Feedback

Duration: 35 to 40 minutes

Calculating Electrical Consumption of Household Appliances

In this task, students will measure the energy usage of various household appliances and brainstorm ways to cut down on energy use. They will work in groups, assessing appliances and comparing their consumption to grasp the practical application of electrical power.

1. Split students into small groups and provide them with a list of electrical appliances and their power ratings.

2. Encourage each group to pick three appliances and estimate how long they are used daily.

3. Have students calculate the monthly consumption for each appliance using the formula discussed earlier.

4. Ask each group to present their findings and explore methods to lower energy use.

5. Encourage students to document their conclusions and prepare a short presentation for the class.

Discussion and Group Feedback

Once the groups have presented their calculations, use the RULER approach to guide the discussion. Recognize their emotions as they discuss their results and energy-saving suggestions. Understand the reasons behind these feelings by inquiring about their reactions when they realised the impact of energy consumption. Label the emotions accurately, aiding students in identifying feelings such as surprise, concern, or pride. Express these emotions appropriately, prompting students to share their insights and experiences regarding responsible energy use. Regulate emotions effectively, encouraging students to think practically about implementing energy-saving ideas at home. This way, the lesson fosters not only technical knowledge but also socio-emotional growth.

Conclusion

Duration: 20 to 25 minutes

Reflection and Emotional Regulation

To reflect on the challenges encountered during the lesson and how students navigated their emotions, facilitate a circle discussion. Ask students to share their experiences with the energy consumption calculation activity, focusing on technical and emotional hurdles. Encourage them to express how they felt discovering the impact of energy use in their homes and how they managed those feelings. Alternatively, they could write a paragraph capturing their emotions and coping strategies from the activity.

Objective: The goal of this section is to motivate students to engage in self-reflection and emotional regulation, equipping them with effective strategies for facing challenges. By contemplating their emotions and actions during the lesson, students enhance their self-awareness and self-control, which are essential for socio-emotional development.

Glimpse into the Future

To wrap up, ask students to set personal and academic goals pertaining to the lesson's content. These goals should encompass both technical aspirations (like improving their skills in calculating energy consumption) and personal objectives (such as adopting energy-saving habits at home). Encourage each student to share one goal with the class, fostering a culture of support and shared responsibility.

Penetapan Objective:

1. Enhance the ability to accurately calculate energy consumption for various appliances.

2. Embrace energy-saving practices at home, like switching off appliances when not in use.

3. Become more aware of the environmental effects of electric energy usage.

4. Cultivate greater responsibility and self-management in energy resource use.

5. Encourage conversations within families about energy savings and sustainable practices. Objective: The objective of this section is to reinforce students' independence and the practical application of their learning, aiming for continuous academic and personal growth. By establishing goals related to the lesson content, students are motivated to apply their new knowledge in a responsible manner, facilitating further development of their technical and socio-emotional skills.
