Emotional Warmup Activity

Journey of Serenity

The selected emotional warm-up activity is Guided Meditation. This technique leads students through a process of relaxation and focus, utilizing the teacher's soothing voice. This practice aids in enhancing concentration, presence, and sets an emotional tone for the lesson.

1. Instruct students to sit comfortably in their seats, with their feet flat on the floor and hands resting on their thighs.

2. Ask them to close their eyes and take a few deep breaths, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth.

3. Commence the meditation using a calm and gentle tone, guiding students to envision a peaceful and safe space, such as a serene beach or a blooming garden.

4. Encourage them to focus on the sensations in their bodies, starting from their feet and progressively moving upwards, relaxing each body part as they proceed.

5. Prompt students to concentrate on their breathing, becoming aware of the air as it enters and exits, and encourage them to let go of any tension or worries.

6. After about 5 minutes, gently prompt students to start moving their fingers and toes, gradually bringing their awareness back to the present space.

7. Wrap up the activity by inviting students to slowly open their eyes and take a deep breath to conclude.

Content Contextualization

Dances from around the world represent much more than mere movements; they embody rich cultural expressions that tell stories, reflect traditions, and convey the emotions of different communities. For instance, Flamenco from Spain isn't just a dance; it represents deep feelings of passion and suffering, encapsulating the essence of Spanish culture. Similarly, African dance celebrates life and community, with movements that express joy, sorrow, hope, and togetherness. By delving into these dances, students not only gain insights into different cultures but also enhance their ability to recognize and interpret emotions conveyed through movement, fostering greater empathy and social awareness essential for socioemotional growth.

Activity with Socioemotional Feedback

Duration: 30 - 40 minutes

Exploring World Dances

In this activity, students will investigate various dances from across the globe through videos and engage in a group discussion about the emotions and narratives portrayed in each dance. This exercise promotes emotional recognition and understanding while enhancing social awareness and communication skills.

1. Divide the class into small groups and provide tablets or computers with internet access.

2. Share a curated list of videos showcasing dances from diverse cultures for groups to view (e.g., Flamenco, Bharatanatyam, Irish Dance, African Dance, and Hip Hop).

3. Instruct students to observe the videos and take notes regarding the movements, rhythms, and emotional expressions displayed by the dancers.

4. Post-viewing, each group should engage in discussion and note the emotions they perceive the dancers to be conveying and how these emotions connect to the culture from which the dance originates.

5. Each group should prepare a brief presentation to share their findings and reflections with the entire class.

6. Facilitate a class discussion, encouraging students to express their own emotions while viewing the dances and how these experiences can deepen their empathy and cultural understanding.

Discussion and Group Feedback

During the group discussion, apply the RULER method by asking students to recognize the emotions reflected in the dances they viewed. Inquire about the emotions that stood out to them and how they identified these feelings through the dancers' movements and expressions. Next, guide them to understand the origins and outcomes of these emotions, exploring how the culture and history of each dance shape the emotions expressed. Encourage students to label these emotions accurately, using specific emotional vocabulary (e.g., joy, sadness, passion, hope). Foster the expression of emotions appropriately by inviting students to share their feelings while watching the dances and how they can positively express these emotions in their everyday lives. Finally, discuss methods to regulate emotions, emphasizing the importance of self-control and empathy when interacting with various cultures and artistic expressions.

Conclusion

Duration: 15 - 20 minutes

Reflection and Emotional Regulation

For the reflection and emotional regulation segment, encourage students to pen down a brief paragraph or engage in a class discussion regarding the challenges they faced while exploring world dances. Ask them to contemplate their feelings during the viewing and discussion of the dances, which emotions surfaced, and how they managed those feelings. Invite them to share the strategies they employed to maintain self-control and empathy throughout the activity. You may wrap up with a feedback session where each student can discuss a specific emotion they experienced and their approach to managing it.

Objective: This subsection aims to foster self-assessment and emotional regulation, assisting students in identifying effective techniques for managing challenging situations. Through reflection on their own emotions and those of others, students develop heightened emotional awareness and empathy, vital skills for personal and social progress.

Glimpse into the Future

To wrap up the lesson, encourage students to set personal and academic goals pertaining to the topics covered. Prompt them to consider how they can incorporate what they have learnt about dances and emotions into their daily lives. For instance, they might aspire to explore a specific culture further or practice a form of dance as an emotional outlet. Encourage them to share these goals with the class to foster a sense of commitment and support.

Penetapan Objective:

1. Investigate more about a specific culture discussed in class.

2. Practice a specific dance form as a means of emotional expression.

3. Participate in a dance presentation at school or within the community.

4. Weekly reflect on the emotions experienced and their management.

5. Develop a research project on the history of a particular dance. Objective: The objective of this subsection is to bolster students' autonomy and practical learning application, aiming for continuity in both academic and personal development. By setting clear and achievable goals, students will feel more driven to further explore the theme and implement the socioemotional skills developed during the lesson.
