Islamism emerged in the Arabian Peninsula in the 7th century, promoting a new religious and political vision that eventually expanded beyond the borders of Arabia. The Islamic expansion was marked by a series of factors, including economic motivations, attraction to the new belief system, and the use of effective military strategies. As historian Marshall G. S. Hodson notes, 'The expansion of Islam from the 7th to the 15th century was one of the most extraordinary movements in world history' (Hodson, 1970). Considering the context above, 1) Explain how the political and military unification promoted by Islamism facilitated the expansion of the religion to regions beyond the Arabian Peninsula. 2) Discuss a significant consequence of the Islamic expansion for the Iberian Peninsula and/or North Africa, and how it influenced the societies and cultures of these regions.
