During the French Revolution, the nation witnessed a drastic change in the governance system, going through the Constitutional Monarchy, the radical phase of the National Convention, and finally the Directory government. Each of these periods reflected a distinct ideology and set of practices that influenced not only France but also the rest of Europe and beyond. While the Constitutional Monarchy sought a balance between monarchical tradition and the demand for social and political reforms, the National Convention was characterized by a period of intense political struggle and the establishment of a revolutionary government. The Directory, in turn, tried to establish a more moderate form of government after the Terror period but faced internal and external challenges that would eventually lead to the establishment of the Napoleonic regime. Based on this context, Jacques, a notable historian, observes: 'The revolution, as a historical phenomenon, seemed to embrace the full spectrum of political possibilities, from liberalism to totalitarianism, in a relatively short period of time. Each phase represented an experiment and a lesson, and its legacy persists to this day.' (Jacques, H., 'The French Revolution and the Future of Democracy', 1995).
