Introduction

Duration: 10 - 15 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to prepare students to understand and identify the various aesthetic and cultural influences present in visual arts, strengthening their capacity for critical analysis and recognizing the importance of cultural diversity.

Warming Up

Start by explaining to the students that aesthetic and cultural matrices are the different cultural influences and artistic traditions that shape how works of art are created and interpreted over time. Then instruct them to use their cell phones to search for an interesting fact about how a specific culture influenced visual arts. This quick exercise will help contextualize the topic and spark the students' curiosity.

Initial Reflections

1. What are some cultures you found that influenced visual arts?

2. How do these influences reflect in the works of art you researched?

3. Why do you think cultural diversity is important in the world of visual arts?

4. Can you identify any specific aesthetic elements that are characteristic of a particular culture?

5. How have social media helped to spread and mix different cultural and aesthetic matrices?

Development

Duration: 70 - 75 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to allow students to consolidate and deepen their understanding of aesthetic and cultural matrices in visual arts in an interactive and collaborative manner. By using digital resources, students will be able to connect prior knowledge with new discoveries, celebrating cultural diversity and exercising their critical and creative skills.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 - Artistic Influencers 

> Duration: 60 - 70 minutes

- Objective: Promote digital interaction and understanding of cultural matrices through the creation of artistic content on fictional social networks, highlighting the importance of cultural diversity in visual arts.

- Description: Students will imagine themselves as digital influencers promoting art from different cultures on their social networks. In groups of up to 5 people, students will create fictional profiles and post content exploring the characteristics of the aesthetic and cultural matrices of a specific culture.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Each group chooses a specific culture to represent.

  • Students will create a fictional profile on a social network (can be on paper or in social media simulation apps).

  • In each profile, students must make at least 5 posts that include images, descriptions, and hashtags that highlight aesthetic and cultural aspects of the chosen culture.

  • Students can use research resources via cell phones or computers to find images and information to enrich their posts.

  • At the end, each group will present their profile to their peers, explaining their choices and the aesthetic and cultural characteristics explored.

Activity 2 - Cultural Treasure Hunt 

> Duration: 60 - 70 minutes

- Objective: Stimulate research and teamwork, as well as critical analysis of works of art through an interactive game that explores different cultural and aesthetic matrices.

- Description: Students will participate in a digital treasure hunt where they need to find and identify aesthetic elements from different cultures in online works of art. Using their cell phones or computers, they must complete missions involving research and critical analysis.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Distribute a list of digital tasks for each group. The tasks include finding works of art from certain cultures and identifying specific aesthetic characteristics.

  • Tasks may include: finding a French Impressionist painting that uses pointillism technique, identifying elements of African art in sculptures, analyzing Japanese influences in manga works.

  • Students should use online resources like virtual museums, art galleries, and image search tools.

  • Upon completing a task, students must record their findings (they can take screenshots and write brief descriptions).

  • After completing all missions, each group presents their findings to the class, highlighting the aesthetic and cultural characteristics identified.

Activity 3 - Visual Stories 

> Duration: 60 - 70 minutes

- Objective: Encourage creativity and collaboration through the creation of a visual narrative that celebrates cultural and aesthetic diversity, promoting a deeper understanding of global artistic influences.

- Description: Students will create an illustrated story that integrates aesthetic and cultural matrices from different parts of the world. Using digital drawing and editing tools, students will collaboratively work to create a visual narrative that explores and celebrates cultural diversity.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Each group chooses at least three different cultures to integrate into their illustrated story.

  • Students use digital tools (drawing apps, image editors) to create illustrations for their story.

  • The story should have a plot that connects the different chosen cultures, showing distinctive aesthetic and cultural influences in each part of the narrative.

  • Students can research online for visual and informative references about the chosen cultures.

  • At the end, each group presents their illustrated story to the class, explaining the aesthetic and cultural choices made throughout the creation.

Feedback

Duration: 20 - 30 minutes

The purpose of this stage is to consolidate learning, promote critical reflection, and stimulate the exchange of ideas among students. Through group discussion, students have the opportunity to share their discoveries, learn from their peers, and receive constructive feedback, further enriching the educational experience.

Group Discussion

Group Discussion: Promote a group discussion with all students, where groups share what they learned while carrying out the activities.

Suggested Outline:

  1. Introduction: Explain the importance of reflecting on what was learned and how it helps in personal and academic growth.
  2. Group Sharing: Ask each group to present a summary of their activities, highlighting the most important discoveries and the aesthetic and cultural characteristics analyzed.
  3. Open Debate: Open for questions and comments from other students about the presentations, encouraging a constructive and enriching dialogue.

Reflections

1. What were the main aesthetic and cultural characteristics you identified in the activities? 2. How do you think these aesthetic and cultural influences contribute to the richness of visual arts? 3. In what way did the use of social media help in exploring and better understanding the cultural matrices studied?

360° Feedback

360° Feedback: Instruct students to conduct a 360° feedback step, where each student must receive feedback from other members of the group they worked in. Explain the importance of constructive and respectful feedback.

Guidelines for Feedback:

  1. Positive Feedback: Ask each student to highlight something positive in their peers' work, such as creativity, dedication, or an interesting idea that the peer had.
  2. Areas for Improvement: Guide students to respectfully mention something that could be improved, such as clarity in communication or organization of the work.
  3. Personal Reflection: Encourage each student to reflect on the feedback received and think about how they can apply these suggestions in future activities.

Conclusion

Duration: 10 - 15 minutes

Purpose: This stage aims to consolidate learning, connecting the contents explored during the lesson with the students' reality and the modern world. It aims to reinforce the importance of aesthetic and cultural matrices in visual arts and to encourage the practical application of this knowledge in daily life, promoting a broader and more critical appreciation of the arts. By the end of the lesson, students should feel inspired to explore and celebrate cultural diversity in their own lives.

Summary

Fun Summary: Imagine that we traveled the world  without leaving the classroom! We explored how different cultures influence visual arts, creating fictional posts as digital influencers and participating in a cultural treasure hunt.
