Necessary MaterialsFictitious city maps, Markers or sticky notes, Materials for staging (props, costumes), Computers or tablets, Internet access, Whiteboard or flipchart, Pens and paper for note-taking, Timer or clock for time management

Premises: This Active Lesson Plan assumes: a 100-minute class duration, prior student study both with the Book and the beginning of Project development, and that only one activity (among the three suggested) will be chosen to be carried out during the class, as each activity is designed to take up a large part of the available time.

Objective

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

In this phase, we aim to clarify the main objectives of the lesson, ensuring that students understand the skills they need to develop. The focus is on exploring the different manifestations of violence, understanding their origins and societal impacts, and nurturing a critical and proactive mindset to address these issues. Clear objectives will guide classroom discussions and activities, ensuring effective use of time for practical application of their prior knowledge.

Objective Utama:

1. Identify and distinguish between various forms of violence (physical, psychological, moral, sexual, and property) prevalent in our society.

2. Encourage students to recognise and discuss the root causes and effects of these types of violence in their daily lives.

3. Cultivate critical thinking abilities so that students can suggest preventive measures and alternatives to combat violence.

Objective Tambahan:

  1. Foster empathy and mutual respect among students during discussions of sensitive subjects.
  2. Create a safe classroom environment where everyone feels free to share their thoughts and personal experiences related to the topic.

Introduction

Duration: (20 - 25 minutes)

This introductory phase aims to engage students with the topic of violence through problem scenarios they might have faced or studied in the past. Such situations help draw connections between concepts and real-life experiences, enhancing the relevance of the discussion. The contextualization places the debate within a broader framework, emphasizing the significance of understanding violence not as isolated incidents, but as part of a societal structure that invites analysis and intervention.

Problem-Based Situation

1. Situation 1: A high school student is being bullied by peers both physically and online. Discuss the consequences this violence can have on the student's academic performance and personal life. What would be an appropriate approach to address this issue?

2. Situation 2: In a local neighbourhood, residents are facing eviction with no prior notice or fair compensation. How does this form of property violence affect the community? What steps might be taken to address or prevent this situation?

Contextualization

Violence, in its different forms, impacts countless individuals around the globe daily. From domestic abuse often hidden away, to more visible instances like public harassment or armed conflicts. Addressing these issues not only expands our understanding of the social fabric that sustains violence but also equips students to recognise and respond to these injustices in their own lives and communities.

Development

Duration: (75 - 80 minutes)

The development phase focuses on the practical application of knowledge gained on different forms of violence. By engaging students through interactive and creative activities, the goal is to solidify their understanding, enhance skills in analysis, argumentation, and problem-solving while promoting empathy and respect. The activities are designed to be enjoyable and informative, enabling students to find realistic solutions to the issues discussed.

Activity Suggestions

It is recommended that only one of the suggested activities be carried out

Activity 1 - Exploring Violence: A Mapping and Solutions Activity

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Enhance skills in critical analysis, teamwork, and problem-solving related to different types of violence.

- Description: Students will be divided into groups and provided with a fictional map of a city, marking locations where various types of violence (physical, psychological, moral, sexual, property) have occurred. Each group will investigate the causes of these incidents and create action plans to prevent or reduce such violence in the future.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into groups of up to 5 students.

  • Hand each group a map of the fictional city with marked incidents.

  • Each group will examine one type of violence, exploring its causes using prior knowledge.

  • Using creative methods, the group must formulate a plan to combat or prevent these forms of violence.

  • Present the plan to the class, explaining their choices and strategies.

Activity 2 - Drama in Action: Depicting Conflict and Resolution

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Promote empathy and understanding of the emotional and social intricacies of violence through drama.

- Description: In this engaging activity, students will create and present short plays that portray instances of violence and their resolutions. Each group is assigned a type of violence to explore creatively, encouraging deep reflection on the emotions and consequences involved.

- Instructions:

  • Form groups and designate a specific type of violence for each to tackle.

  • Groups should craft a short dramatic sketch that not only outlines the problem but also presents a solution or a positive outcome.

  • Gather props and costumes to enhance the performance.

  • After preparation, each group performs their play for the class.

  • Facilitate a discussion on the different approaches and solutions offered.

Activity 3 - Interactive Debate: Challenging Ideas and Solutions

> Duration: (60 - 70 minutes)

- Objective: Build skills in debate, argumentation, and critical analysis on preventive and reactive measures against violence.

- Description: In this interactive session, students will engage in a structured debate where they defend or oppose solutions for specific types of violence. The debate will take place in rounds, allowing for preparation and argumentation, stimulating critical thought and persuasive skills.

- Instructions:

  • Divide the class into two large groups. One will advocate for a solution to a type of violence, while the other will challenge it.

  • Promote time for each group to prepare their arguments using previously studied material.

  • Conduct rounds of argumentation and rebuttals alternately.

  • Allow a final segment for questions and answers between the two groups.

  • Vote to determine which group presented the most compelling arguments.

Feedback

Duration: (10 - 15 minutes)

This stage of the lesson plan aims to reinforce the knowledge acquired by students, enabling them to reflect and discuss openly the various forms of violence examined during the lesson. Through group discussions, it seeks to strengthen comprehension of concepts, foster an exchange of ideas, and encourage critical thinking on applying learned solutions in real scenarios.

Group Discussion

Kick off the group discussion with a brief recap of the activities conducted, asking students how these helped them understand the various forms of violence and their impacts. Encourage them to share insights and personal experiences related to the topic. Use a warm and inclusive tone to create a supportive space for all.

Key Questions

1. What key takeaways did you gather from participating in the activities on different forms of violence?

2. In what ways could you implement the proposed solutions in daily life to help prevent or counter violence in your community?

3. How does comprehending the causes of violence aid in creating safer and more inclusive environments?

Conclusion

Duration: (5 - 10 minutes)

The aim of this stage in the lesson plan is to ensure students consolidate the knowledge gained during the activities, appreciating the different forms of violence and how they can employ this learning to inspire positive changes within their communities. This phase also reinforces the connection between theory and practice, demonstrating the relevance of what they have learned to the real world.
